Specific Risk Material

Specific Risk Material is statutory defined and varies from country to country. The aim of these statutory restrictions is to prevent human infections of the more serious animal to human infections. These infectious agents are normally called Prions to distinguish them from the everyday bacteria, fungus and viruses.

Most of the Specific Risk Materialdeals with the brain, spine and marrow found in the long bones of cattle, sheep and goats. South Africa has no limit on the age of Beef spinal products, while it is limited to 30 months in the US and 10 months in the EU. Some organs and intestines are also listed. These Specific Risk Material would form part of the daily condemned meat and tissue produced by abattoirs.

Seems that pigs and poultry are not that prone to be infected by Prions, but are more prone to serious virus infections that can be transmitted to humans like Avian and Swine Flu.

Prions are responsible for Mad Cow Disease, Scrapie in sheep to name a few and prions are also very difficult to destroy. The most cost-effective way of destroying prions is by utilizing a high temperature alkaline hydrolysis process specifically designed for this purpose. Convertech offers numerous alkaline hydrolysis options ranging from small laboratory sized units up to systems that can handle several tons at a time
