Abattoirs

Abattoirs by their very nature are prolific generators of biological waste. This applies to both meat and poultry abattoirs. The main sources of biological waste are condemned meat and specific risk material; blood; paunch contents; feathers and hair; waste water etc.

The topmost priority for any abattoir is to maintain the highest standards of hygiene and deliver high quality meat to their customers. Standards are set and maintained by Health Inspectors, Veterinary Inspectors and Meat Quality Inspectors

Biological waste is a major problem for any abattoir. Disposal of biological waste is a loss leader and can have serious implications for the abattoir in hygiene and financial terms. Historically the disposal methods included incinerating, landfills, burial, rendering, composting and re-feeding etc. These methods are not always available, economically viable or effective. Others sometimes consider it as just transferring the biological waste problem from the premises of the abattoir to somewhere else without solving the biological waste problem.
