Veterinary Practitioners generate two forms of biological Waste viz. Infectious and Non-Infectious waste.
Non-Infectious Waste will normally be the bulk of the Biological Waste produced and is historically disposed of as solid waste. This leads to unique problems where the public is concerned with offensive smells, insects, rodents and scavengers.
Animal tissue, organs and carcasses that are infected by zoonotic or infectious agents are considered to be Infectious Waste. Disposal of this type of biological waste is extremely problematic and hazardous.
Historical disposal options included incinerating, landfills, and burial. These disposal methods are not very effective, or too expensive and sometimes not very eco-friendly.
